Bambizzoozled Has Its Place

I am not one to be an apologist. Just as blackface and minstrelsy have their places in society, the discussion of blackface has its own place. If you wish to complain -- lighten up!

Cross-Racial Depictions in Cinema

Bambizzoozled is about moving pictures which include "racechange" or racial impersonation, including blackface and whiteface. Some movies with blackface scenes are depictions of minstrel shows; other films include white actors in blackface performing in a manner which has stemmed from the minstrel tradition; others have black actors in whiteface; and others still, black actors in blackface. Many blackface movies are not available on DVD - some are not even on VHS or any other type of home video.

In some cases the depictions are anthropomorphic, as in the crows featured in Dumbo, one of which is named Jim Crow. The "blackface" in this case is paint (or ink - or whatever they used to use to color animation cells). No time to explain. Read this for now.

At any rate, all of these things will be referred to as "blackface" for the most part. Don't screw with me about details.

I have not yet decided to embark on the listing of all such anthropomorphous cases in the world of animation, of which there are numerous. The animation realm also includes numerous cases of stereotyping, which are beyond the present scope of Bambizzoozled. For now, read this.

The lists of movies being provided on Bambizzoozled are for informational and educational purposes in spite of the tradition of blackface minstrelsy being considered politically incorrect, or racist by today's standards. Bambizzoozled is not making a statement about what is or is not racist, & c. Don't bother me with that crap.

A Note on Typography

Being of the graphic designer's mindset, and often aware of subtle nuances of, what is perhaps not-so-coincidental, coincidence, I noticed that Adobe's font Rosewood was used in much of the collateral material related to Spike Lee's monumental film, Bamboozled. I found the choice of a font by such a name to be both appropriate, and interesting. Being, also, a whiteboy -- and one who doesn't want to waste his time getting sued repeatedly -- I felt it appropriate that I not choose a font with a name so meaningful to Black, American history at large. Therefore, I have chosen Adobe's Zebrawood.
